Ruth Johnston

(Washington, DC) – The National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) has named veteran higher education business leader Dr. Ruth A. Johnston as acting vice president of consulting, effective immediately.

A sought-after consultant and expert in public higher education administration, Johnston will oversee NACUBO’s growing portfolio of advisory services, which supports colleges and universities through financial, operational, and organizational assessments; models and budget for forecasts; resource optimization and net revenue growth strategies; leadership development and training; and more.

“I am extremely pleased to attract a higher education business leader of Ruth’s caliber to this important role at NACUBO. She has both the breadth and depth of experience to help our member institutions navigate key financial challenges and decisions,” said NACUBO President and CEO Kara D. Freeman. “Her knowledge of NACUBO members and institutions will also greatly assist our efforts to expand and re-envision the consulting programs and services we provide in the future.”

Johnston has decades of experience in higher education business and finance and has held multiple roles with NACUBO, including as a member of the board of directors and as a consultant. She also has served as a board member and president of the Western Association of College and University Business Officers (WACUBO). On campus, Johnston most recently was system vice chancellor and chief operating officer at New Mexico State University and previously was vice chancellor for planning and administration at the University of Washington Bothell. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Johnston College/University of Redlands, a master’s degree from Pacific Lutheran University, and a Ph.D. from Union Institute. Johnston also is the founder and owner of RAJ Consulting, LLC.

“Leading NACUBO Consulting is an exciting opportunity to assist higher education administrators in their many efforts to continuously improve,” Johnston said. “I look forward to working with college and university professionals nationwide and to contributing to higher education’s ultimate mission of ensuring student success.”

At NACUBO, Johnston will work with Senior Vice President for Strategic Partnerships and Communications Timothy McDonough. Johnston and McDonough succeed Dr. Jim Hundrieser, who led the creation of NACUBO Consulting in 2020 and now serves as senior advisor.
