Marc A Mathews
Marc Mathews brings over forty years of financial and accounting experience, the last 20+ years serving as a chief financial officer for public and private higher educational institutions, to NACUBO Consulting.
Mathews has extensive experience in higher education financial operations, internal control structure review, debt and financing structures and debt issuance, risk management, financial statement presentation, and external audit. Additionally, he also has an in-depth knowledge of and first-hand experience in institutional endowment management and investment policy development. Mathews has developed multi-year budget models at both the University of Kentucky and Transylvania University that have been used to forecast various 10-year operating scenarios. He has worked with volunteer board members in serving as primary institutional liaison to the finance, audit, risk management, budget, investment, and facilities management committees, developing meeting agendas, meeting materials and an annual calendar of events for each committee. He has overseen the financial aspect of construction management on projects of various sizes up to $30 million.
He served as assistant controller, controller and treasurer of the University of Kentucky from 1998 – 2009. He then returned to serve his alma mater, Transylvania University, as vice president for finance until his retirement in June 2021. In these roles he was responsible for financial reporting, budget, accounting, human resources, risk management, treasury operations, debt management, endowment management, purchasing, facilities management, and public safety.
Marc has a BA (majors in business and accounting) from Transylvania University and an MS in accounting from the University of Kentucky. He holds a CPA license in Kentucky. Marc previously served as a member of the NACUBO Small College Council.
