Tom Herbert brings nearly 30 years of foundation and fundraising knowledge to NACUBO Consulting. Most recently, he was Miami University’s senior vice president for university advancement and president of the Miami University Foundation.  For almost ten years he led an advancement staff of approximately one hundred and fifteen in all areas of alumni relations, communications, information technology and development.  He successfully completed Miami University’s first $500-million campaign and successfully launched its first $1-billion campaign.  During his time as president of Miami University’s Foundation he nearly doubled the size of its board and as well as its endowment.  He also worked with its board to fully revise its governance structure and develop its new strategic plan.

Herbert has presented at numerous development conferences for the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and served on its National Commission on Philanthropy.  His service to CASE has also included developing and chairing both CASE’s Management Institute and its Institute for Chief Business Officers and Chief Advancement Officers.  Currently he is on the faculty at Rice University’s Center of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership where he has taught a seminar on nonprofit management.  He also served on the national board of NACUBO, the first advancement professional to do so.  

Herbert holds a BA in history from Northwestern University and a JD from Chicago-Kent College of Law.
