Prior to her retirement in 2019, Karen spent ten years providing technical accounting, reporting, finance, and analytical expertise to not-for-profit organizations with a focus on higher education. From 2002 to 2009, Karen was an Associate Controller at Stanford University where she was responsible for the overall operations of the Investment Accounting, Financial Reporting, Capital Accounting, Payroll, and Disbursements departments. Prior to Stanford, she was Controller at a software startup company and a Senior Audit Manager with PricewaterhouseCoopers. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and an MBA from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, California and is a licensed CPA in the state of California.
Karen has worked closely with NACUBO over the years: authoring articles for Business Officer magazine; presenting on a variety of accounting topics impacting higher education institutions at workshops, conferences and on webcasts; and acting as a technical advisor to its Accounting Principles Council. Karen is an emeritus member of the AICPA Not-for-Profit Advisory Council and the AICPA Not-for-Profit Expert Panel.
