2023

Chris Cook

Chris Cook, Vanderbilt University

Chris Cook, executive director of the Vanderbilt University Office of Student Accounts, received the 2023 Student Financial Services Award for his extensive contributions to his institution, the profession, and NACUBO. He has worked for Vanderbilt University for 10 years, where he oversees the accounts receivable and cash management functions and helped to lead the institution’s transition to cashless operations. Cook has served as a member of the NACUBO Student Financial Services Council for five years, among his many contributions to educational programming and advocacy efforts.

 

2022

Christine Blakney-

Christine Blakney, Texas Tech University

Christine Blakney, senior managing director of Student Business Services at Texas Tech University, received the 2022 Student Financial Services Award for her extensive contributions to her institution, the profession, and NACUBO. Working at Texas Tech since 2003, Blakney leads operations for all tuition and fee billing, refunding, collections, and related student communications. She has been a key advocate on 1098-T issues with the IRS and is a frequent contributor to NACUBO programs, councils, and research surveys.

 

2021

Judith Flink

Judith N. Flink, retired

Judith Flink received the 2021 Student Financial Services Award for her career-long dedication to the profession. Over her career, she served as director of student financial services and cashiering operations at the University of Illinois at Chicago, executive director of university student financial services and cashier operations for the University of Illinois System, and the interim associate controller at Rutgers University, among other positions.

Flink was active in advocacy efforts, testifying in front of U.S. House of Representatives and Senate committees about student financial aid issues. She lent her volunteer efforts widely to NACUBO, presenting at conferences, writing for association publications, and serving on NACUBO committees on veterans affairs and third party billing systems. She also served on the Department of Education's Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance, including terms as chair and vice chair, and on focus groups at the department, among many other contributions.

 

2020

Charmaine Daniels

Charmaine Daniels, Morehouse College

Charmaine Daniels, associate vice president of student financial services at Morehouse College, received the 2020 Student Financial Services Award. She manages the administration of the $34 million-dollar donation the college recently received to pay off students’ loan debt. She also leads the student financial services department and participates in other campus-wide projects to support strategic financial goals, among other duties.

Daniels also makes a sizable impact on the higher education community beyond her campus. She is a frequent presenter at NACUBO and other industry conferences and has testified for common-sense regulations on Capitol Hill. She was a member of the NACUBO Student Financial Services Council from 2014-2018 and serves on the Student Financial Services Conference planning committee, among other official groups. She also strives to pay forward the encouragement she received as a young student financial services staffer, emphasizing the importance of professional development for her teammates and freely offering her expertise to colleagues at other institutions.

 

2019

Doug Schantz

Doug Schantz, Wittenberg University

Doug Schantz oversees an approximately $41 million annual student receivables portfolio and a Perkins and institutional loan portfolio of nearly $6 million. He has participated in numerous campus committees, including the Retention Task Force and Wittenberg’s Title IX Sexual Complaint Grievance Board and has served as an instructor for the university’s first-year seminar. Schantz has delivered presentations to a variety of higher education stakeholders through the years, including at NACUBO’s annual meetings and Student Financial Services Conference. He also regularly gives presentations at Springfield-area high schools, providing counseling to future students on completing the FAFSA and paying for college. Additionally, Schantz has appeared on NPR, and was featured in Money and U.S. News & World Report magazines.

Schantz was a 4-year member of NACUBO’s Student Financial Services Council and was chair for the 2016–17 term. He is an active member of the Ohio Bursars Association, having served as a board member from 1998 to 2002. In 2012, he appeared before the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs at a hearing on private student loans.

Schantz holds a B.A. from Wittenberg University and lives in Springfield with his wife and three children.

 

2018

David Glezerman

David Glezerman, Temple University

David R. Glezerman is the assistant vice president and bursar at Temple University, where he has been employed since 1986. He has overall responsibility for billing, collections, and management of student finances. Mr. Glezerman has been employed in higher education receivables management for 35 years. A nationally-renowned speaker who has presented at many industry conferences and workshops, Mr. Glezerman has worked with the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) as a faculty and program committee member for numerous conferences and author of several articles and books. The founding chair of NACUBO’s Student Financial Services (SFS) Council, Glezerman also was the recipient of association’s 2010 Professional Development award.

A graduate of Rutgers University, Glezerman received his MBA in Human Resources Management from Temple University.
