Overview

This webcast will focus on best practices for evaluating market opportunity and program economics of an academic program portfolio. We will share how to combine data on external markets and internal capabilities, financials, and mission.

We will start by describing a data-informed approach to assess markets for academic programs. The relevant data sources help professionals understand student demand, employment opportunities, competition, and degree-level fit. We will cover how each data source has strengths and weaknesses and how schools can use this data to identify program opportunities in their market.

Next, we will share a methodology to calculate program and course economics. To ensure adequate resources for lower-margin but mission-critical programs, it is essential to understand which programs produce contribution margin. Course-level economics can identify critical levers to improve efficiencies across the institution without making dramatic program cuts.

Finally, we will present tools for modeling out scenarios that marry campus surplus/losses and the tradeoffs needed in budgeting for academic and supporting activities.
