Although data management and use have always been core functions within student financial services, opportunities and expectations for leveraging data and analytics in higher education has evolved. In the 2019 NACUBO Study of Analytics, the most chief business officers thought more importance should be placed on using analytics to support student success and institutional operations—and events since then have only heightened the need for improved decision-making. In this session, presenters will review practices for improving data use at the institutional and individual levels. We will discuss how to build data knowledge, best practices for asking and refining questions, and ways to ensure data support institutional goals.

Transcript and registration holds are ubiquitous in higher education, as they are effective tools for encouraging students to complete actions sought by institutions. Lately, however, holds have been in the spotlight. Are institutions using holds too frequently? How are colleges and universities communicating to students about holds on their records? The pandemic forced many institutions to question existing communication strategies. Opening a one-stop shop can be a challenge at any time, let alone during a pandemic. Hear one institution’s journey to becoming more efficient with collaboration between two very distinct and highly regulated offices.
