Overview

Economic Sustainability Leadership

Institutional investors are increasingly looking to integrate socially responsible investing (SRI) into their portfolios to better align their investing with the mission and values of their institution and constituents. SRI, also known as impact investing, sustainable investing, and values-based investing (among other names), is a strategy that incorporates environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors into the investment process.

In this session, senior Commonfund experts and institutional investment professionals will discuss integrating these two SRI components into your institutions’ investment portfolios and how they can potentially improve the risk/return profile of your endowment.

From an Environmental standpoint, investing in companies, and crafting strategies that promote sustainability—such as a focus on investing in clean energy and in new technologies that support a reduction in carbon emissions—can have a positive impact on society, the environment and your portfolio. What environmental factors are important to your institution and its mission and how should you incorporate them into your investment policy?

From a Social standpoint, the lack of diversity in the asset management field and amongst college and university asset managers specifically, is an ongoing and persistent issue that must be addressed. Research has shown that diversity related to investing and more specifically, investing in diverse managers, expands the opportunity set for institutional investors and can lead to better performance. How should your institution add considerations for
diverse managers to its manager review process?
