The idea of mission-aligned investing often arises when the constituents of an institution spur its leadership to request that the board and investment committee evaluate taking action. In the face of increasing demand for values alignment to be reflected throughout institution—including the investment portfolio—boards play a key role in guiding their institutions through this process. Recognizing the magnitude of these decisions, many boards are seeking guidance on how to successfully navigate the journey towards mission alignment.
With a commitment to fostering good governance practices, Strategic Investment Group (SIG) researched how institutions have successfully navigated this important initiative and put together a “roadmap” that outlines the steps for boards and committees to consider implementing and guidance on questions they should ask and answer as they weigh the related merits and challenges.
During this discussion, the panel will outline the key steps this research has led SIG to recommend and offer insight from two institutions on what parts of the roadmap worked for them in their journey as well as what they chose to do differently and why.
