Program Partners Offer Scholarships for Students
We are pleased to announce that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA); the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE); APPA: The Association for Higher Education Facilities Officers; the National College and University Business Officers (NACUBO); the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP); the Campus Safety, Health and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA); the College Consortium for Environmental Excellence (C2E2); and the University of Maryland will hold the 3rd Smart & Sustainable Campuses Conference on March 31 - April 2, 2008 at the Adele Stamp Student Union at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD.
We are accepting applications from college students interested in receiving a complimentary registration to attend the conference. All interested students must send a resume, plus a one page letter that explains their career goals, why they wish to attend the Conference, and how they intend to use what they learn in the future. Note: the letter will be very important in selecting who will receive a scholarship. We expect to offer 20 scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate students.
The scholarship will include:
- on-site registration materials,
- attendance at all conference sessions and
- meals offered during the event.
The scholarship will not provide for travel, housing or non-conference meals.
Background:
The 3rd Annual Smart & Sustainable Campuses Conference brings together current and future leaders in the areas of campus planning and development, environmental health and safety, sustainability, finance and business, facilities management, and procurement. This comprehensive symposium will feature sessions and workshops on smart growth and sustainable practices that serve the economy, the community, and the environment specifically in:
- Institutionalizing Sustainability - Benefits, strategies, sustainability and mission, Presidents Climate Commitment, trustee engagement, committees/task forces on campus, financing sustainability, student recruitment, and marketplace advantages
- Operational Solutions - Energy, green building, transportation, procurement, and food and dining
- Smart Growth and Campus Planning - Development issues, open spaces, density, mixed uses, future growth, growth and carbon emission reduction, town/gown collaboration
- Assessment and Measurement - Behavioral changes measurement, campus improvements metrics, and reporting
Colleges and universities have a significant impact on the built and natural environment and are under increasing pressure from governments, students, and community members to carefully mitigate their environmental footprint. NACUBO is partnering with several other higher education associations to again deliver a comprehensive symposium on smart growth and sustainable practices that serves the economy, the community, and the environment.
Instructions: To receive a scholarship, all students must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program and must submit a resume and explain in a cover letter how the conference relates to your course of study and your future career. Sustainability requires many disciplines such as environmental sciences, engineering, landscape architecture, architecture, business, public policy, administration, sociology, and political science. Students from all applicable majors are welcomed to apply. Just remember that you must make your case in your cover letter - so be factual but persuasive.
NOTE: All resumes must be current, and include the applicant’s major, GPA, the home and school address, home and school telephone and fax number and email address.
NOTE: All applications must be received by February 29, 2008. Reviews will be conducted following the closing date. Due to the volume of applications, only those students who have been accepted (not declines) will be notified by March 14, 2008.
