NACUBO Goes Green - NACUBO believes serving our members and protecting the environment can go hand-in-hand. To demonstrate our commitment to both, we are purchasing carbon offsets to mitigate the pollution generated by venue energy use and participants’ travel at this year's Smart and Sustainable Campuses Conference. Carbon offsets help build renewable energy projects, which produce less pollution than their fossil fuel counterparts.
Purchased through NativeEnergy, an organization dedicated to helping build Native American, farmer-owned, and community-based renewable projects, the carbon offsets will fund farmer-owned renewable wind projects in Minnesota. Not only will this reduce our impact on the environment, but it will also support local farms. Join us for NACUBO's first ever carbon-neutral event, and learn how your campus can become more sustainable too. For more information on the renewable wind projects being funded or NativeEnergy, visit www.nativeenergy.com Overview
The 3rd Annual Smart & Sustainable Campuses Conference will be held in the Adele H. Stamp Student Union Center on campus at the University of Maryland, College Park, with housing accomodations at the Inn and Conference Center, University of Maryland University College. The conference brings together current and future leaders in the areas of campus planning and development, environmental health and safety, sustainability, finance and business, facilities management, and procurement. This comprehensive symposium will feature sessions and workshops on smart growth and sustainable practices that serve the economy, the community, and the environment specifically in:
- Institutionalizing Sustainability—Benefits, strategies, sustainability and mission, Presidents Climate Commitment, trustee engagement, committees/task forces on campus, financing sustainability, student recruitment, and marketplace advantages
- Operational Solutions—Energy, green building, transportation, procurement, and food and dining
- Smart Growth and Campus Planning—Development issues, open spaces, density, mixed uses, future growth, growth and carbon emission reduction, town/gown collaboration
- Assessment and Measurement—Behavioral changes measurement, campus improvements metrics, and reporting
Colleges and universities have a significant impact on the built and natural environment and are under increasing pressure from governments, students, and community members to carefully mitigate their environmental footprint. NACUBO is partnering with several other higher education associations to again deliver a comprehensive symposium on smart growth and sustainable practices that serves the economy, the community, and the environment.
The conference is produced from a partnership of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), NACUBO, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), the University of Maryland, College Park, Campus Consortium for Environmental Excellence (C2E2), APPA: The Association for Higher Education Facilities Officers, the Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) and the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP).

America's colleges and universities are often located in towns or neighborhoods that have been going through a period of out-migration, disinvestment, decline, and change of use for several decades. Employees now live further away from campus than ever. More students live "near" campus than "on" campus in high-density, converted single family homes, resulting in contentious town/gown issues and a deterioration in student quality of life. Unchecked, these trends are a strategic threat to an institution's growth, quality and viability. This presentation argues that neighborhood development is a key strategic issue to be managed by higher education, and will focus on ways to address these issues through leadership, not ownership.
