3:45 pm I AM Trying to Help You: Customer Service for Financial Services

Dr. Neal Raisman, President, AcademicMAPS

Today’s college students expect and demand a higher level of service, creating new demands on college and university staff at all levels, but especially for people working in finance, student accounts, financial aid, and records offices. Dealing with them incorrectly can increase stress and anxiety for all involved. Good customer service in an academic setting is different than that in a retail store, a restaurant, or any commercial establishment. This workshop/presentation will help you understand college students and how to train your staff to deliver great customer service so they provide greater value and find increased enjoyment in their work.

Dr. Raisman, a past college and university president, dean and faculty member, did the research and field studies at colleges and universities that led to Embrace the Oxymoron: Customer Service in Higher Education. He is now president of AcademicMAPS, a consulting firm providing research, solutions and training to make colleges and businesses better experiences for students and employees.

Regulatory Update II – Student Assistance General Provisions

J. Kolotos

The Student Assistance General Provisions—the section of the Title IV regulations that are common to the administration of all of the federal aid programs—govern draw downs of funds, disbursement to students, and return of Title IV funds when a student withdraws. Learn about recent changes to these rules that go into effect on July 1, while you get a refresher on the cash management regulations in general..

1:15 pm Perspectives On Leadership And Change For The Future

2:25 PM CONCURRENT SESSION III

Payment Processing
S. Rosko
Student financial services offices receive many checks, worth thousands of dollars, especially at their busiest times. Getting these funds deposited in the bank in a timely manner generates additional interest income for the institution. Learn how check conversion technologies—POP, ARC, and BOC—can work for you, and the impact these advances can have for your institution.

Going with the Workflow
G. O’Keefe

Many institutions want to reap the benefits of workflow but are intimidated by its apparent complexity. Happily, customer-oriented workflows in the student financial services arena tend to be very simple and easy to implement. This session will show how institutions can develop new automated services that will wow their customers and excite their student financial services teams.

Your Money Matters!

G. Curry

Helping students learn better money management skills—financial literacy—is increasingly falling under the domain of the student financial services office. Review the need for a campus financial responsibility program including efforts to limit credit card marketing on college and university campuses. Using California State University, Sacramento's web-based program, Your Money Matters, as an example, ideas and resources for you to use to develop your own program will be shared.

3:30 pm Refreshment Break in the Exhibit Showcase
4:00 PM CONCURRENT SESSION IV

Are there topics that you wish you had the opportunity to sit down and discuss with your peers? Questions about something happening on your campus that you’d like to find out if someone else has an answer for? Something on your mind that isn’t on the formal program? This is your opportunity for free exchange with faculty and your colleagues.

8:00 am Student Lending: Managing Business Relationships While Meeting Student Needs

R. DeRupo, D. Harrison, J. Nealon

Change has always been a part of managing financial services with varying requirements among federal, state and private funding sources.  New regulations and codes of conduct are now a part of the landscape that pose a challenge of adhering to the letter of the law while providing advice and counseling to students and families.  Join us for a session that discusses how your colleagues are dealing with the issues and a chance to share your thoughts.

9:15 am CONCURRENT SESSION V

CRM - What's That?
K. Roberts
If you were to put ten people in a room and ask them to define CRM (customer relationship management), you would likely get 12 different definitions. Like TQM, workflow, and ERP, the term CRM has become a buzzword. Most people have a vague idea of what it means, but nothing concrete. One reason for this is that CRM is as much a verb as it is a noun. It is as much a philosophy as it is a system. It is as much a part of an institution's culture as it is a set of business practices. It is no wonder that even though CRM systems have been prevalent in the business world for more than a decade, we are still struggling to define it.

Putting Student Record Information at Parents’ Fingertips
J. Selander
Learn how the University of Minnesota developed an online tool for students to virtually share up to six different areas of their student record (including student financial transactions, financial aid awards and status, enrollment information, holds, and grades) to their parents and other guests. This new web tool has reduced the number of parent questions, reduced the need to process paper release forms, increased the understanding of the student account and financial aid processes, as well as furthered our goal of promoting student and parent relationships.

Benchmarking for Student Financial Services
C. Daulton, J. Shedd

How can you tell how well you are managing SFS on your campus? Join members of NACUBO’s SFS Benchmarking work group for a demonstration of the association’s new benchmarking tool (currently available to NACUBO Tuition Discounting Study participants), and discussion of potential measures for student financial services. We’ll be looking for your feedback in this interactive session.

Preparing for Emergencies: Lessons from Katrina

C. Simoneaux, C. S. Tregre

The Link Between Finance and Retention
P. Bylaska

Retention is important to the finances of the institution, and student finances are important to retention. How can we, particularly student service professionals, have a positive impact on both? Arguing that more attention needs to be paid to the impact of family financial factors on retention, this session will explore some surprises in current research on income deficiencies, financial aid, work, borrowing, and financial literacy. Finally, possible alternatives to the financial drop-out will be discussed.

Introducing the Kuali Student System
J. Barnhill Jr., M. Murphy

In particular, hear about plans for a new student financials module currently under development.
