Overview

This program is a fantastic introduction for new professionals moving into higher education accounting as well as those individuals seeking to learn more about other areas of accounting. The workshop presents accounting and financial reporting in the areas of endowments, investments, gifts, split interest agreements, capital assets, debt, and operating activities. 

Attendees receive a thorough explanation of Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) standards relevant to higher education institutions. Cash flow statement sessions are held concurrently allowing the faculty to focus on the public and not-for-profit sectors of higher education reporting.

There is emphasis placed on preparing and understanding the financial statements, including hands-on exercises and sample statements for review.

The workshop is conducted by an experienced faculty including a university president, a controller, and an accounting professor. A networking reception is also included.

Faculty

Learn from three of the top stars in higher education accounting! NACUBO’s Intermediate Accounting and Reporting workshop presents a unique opportunity to draw on the experience of a university president and a controller. They are  extremely knowledgeable and have become known for presentation styles that make the content come alive.

Dr. Jerry B. Farley, president of Washburn University in Topeka, KA, has been called the dean of higher education accounting. He previously was vice president for administrative affairs at the University of Oklahoma, Norman and Health Sciences Center campuses.  Prior to that, he was vice president for business and finance at Oklahoma State University. Dr. Farley is a past chairman of the NACUBO Board of Directors, past president of SACUBO, and past chairman of the NACUBO Accounting Principles Council.  He is a certified public accountant and co-author of the first and second editions of the Basic Fund Accounting training package.  Dr. Farley is the recipient of the NACUBO Daniel D. Robinson Award for his contribution to the field of college and university accounting.

John R. Kroll is controller for the University of Chicago.  His responsibilities include five major areas: University accounting, financial reporting, and cash management; debt management; post award administration; payroll and accounts payable; and procurement.  Kroll came to the University of Chicago from Deloitte & Touche, where he was primarily involved with accounting and auditing services for colleges and universities, other nonprofit organizations, and governmental units.  He is a certified public accountant and past chair of NACUBO’s Accounting Principles Council.  Mr. Kroll is the recipient of NACUBO’s Daniel D. Robinson Award and NACUBO’s Professional Development Award for his contributions to higher education professional development activities and publications.

Dr. Mary L. Fischer is a professor of accounting at The University of Texas at Tyler.  Prior to her move to Texas, she taught at Fairfield University and served as controller at both Wesleyan University and at Columbia University.  Dr. Fischer has written a wide array of articles on accounting education, cash flow, fund accounting, college and university accounting, unrelated business tax, and financial administration.  She is a co-author of the fourth edition of College and University Business Administration and the updated Basic Fund Accounting training package.  Dr. Fischer has authored accounting tutorials for the NACUBO Web site.  She received both the NACUBO Daniel D. Robinson Award and the Professional Development and Scholarship Award.
