Overview

The workshop location has been changed.  It will now be held at NACUBO's Corporate Office in Washington, DC. Please call Christina Bartholomew, Program Manager at 202.861.2568 for additional information.

Bringing about organizational change is a challenging and complex process that gives higher education leaders the choice of either becoming the architects of change or its victims. This highly interactive workshop provides guidance on not just what to do, but the how and who of getting it done.

Dr. Brent Ruben guides participants on a hands-on journey through the critical success factors in organizational change—planning, assessment, culture, communication and leadership.  Attendees receive and utilize the practical book Ruben co-authored with colleague Sherrie Tromp, Strategic Planning in Higher Education: A Leader’s Guide, applied specifically to the challenges of leading change initiatives.

The workshop includes presentations, small group discussions, and also provides participants the opportunity to work through a case study of major organizational and cultural changes at a fictional university.  Time is provided to discuss and strategize about change initiative challenges that participants have at their own institutions.

The case focuses on efforts to bring significant organizational change being planned for McCallson University, a hypothetical institution that has decided to create a “Campus Without Walls” initiative – designed to propel MSU into a position of state and regional prominence in online and distance education programs.   A key component of the challenge is to develop and implement strategic, leadership, and communication plans for the new initiative that respond to an identified need in education marketplace, and to do in a manner that takes account of the realities of MSUs academic and administrative cultures of MSU. Fortunately for the leadership team, NACUBO will be collecting a group of able and dedicated consultants- that's you! - to assist in masterminding this change effort.  The workshop challenge will be to develop a plan, implementation and management strategies to make this a successful change initiative.
