What's New in NACUBO Research?
- 2007 NACUBO Endowment Study Results Released
The 2007 NACUBO Endowment Study results--the NES executive summary and the complete study--are now available for purchase and download. The 2007 NES results are based on 785 colleges and universities representing over $411 billion in endowment assets. Complimentary access to the study has been given to all participating institutions and study sponsors. A press release and four tables from the 2007 NES are available for free on the Public NES Tables page.
- NACUBO Benchmarking for Student Financial Services
A committee of student financial services professionals from NACUBO member institutions has developed a draft survey that collects data on 12 performance measures, such as the percentage of student accounts in a collections process; number of third-party bills per FTE staff assigned to bills, and student financial services operating budgets per FTE student. Those institutions that participate in the full survey, slated for rollout in late fall 2008, will be able to benchmark the efficiency of their institution's student financial services with a self-selected peer institution group using the NACUBO Benchmarking Tool. In Summer 2008, NACUBO intends to conduct a pilot of this survey. If you are interested in participating in the pilot, please contact Christina Daulton at christina.daulton@nacubo.org.
What's New in Higher Education Research?
- Graduate School Contributions to the Public Good
The Council of Graduate Schools recently released a new report, Graduate Education and the Public Good, which offers evidence and examples of the ways U.S. graduate education benefits the economic, social, and cultural strength of the nation.
- New PIRG Report: The Campus Credit Card Trap
Released in March 2008 by the U.S. Public Interest Research Groups, "The Campus Credit Card Trap" report analyzed how students pay for their education, how many use credit cards, how they use them, and their attitudes toward credit card marketing on campus.
- Containing Costs at State Colleges and Universities
More than 80 percent of the 114 American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) member colleges that responded to a recent AASCU/SunGard survey reported that cost containment at their institutions was "very" or "extremely" important. However, only a small number set aside resources (funding, staff, and time) to a "significant" extent to identify and implement cost containment measures.
- Foreign Applications to Graduate Schools Increase Slightly, Still Behind Previous Levels
Foreign applications to U.S. graduate schools climbed three percent from fall 2007 to 2008, but are still down 16 percent since 2003.
- Increase in Unsubsidized Stafford Loans Fuels Growth in Federal Borrowing
The percentage of students borrowing unsubsidized Stafford loans more than doubled, from 10 percent to 21 percent, between 1995-96 and 2003-04, according to a new report by the National Center for Education Statistics.
- Dwindling Number of Potential College Applicants Forecasted for Many States
A new report from WICHE projects that the number of public high school graduates and potential college applicants is expected to gradually decline between 2007-08 and 2013-14. However, the impacts vary by state--Southern and Western states are projected to experience increases in high school graduates while many states in the Northeast and Midwest will face significant declines.
- Project on Student Debt Lists Financial Aid Pledges
A number of colleges have recently announced financial aid policy changes that limit or eliminate student loans from financial aid packages. The Project on Student Debt maintains a list of pledges offered and an analysis comparing the net cost of attendance at schools with this type of pledge.
- Pending IPEDS Finance Survey Change Announced
In an effort to achieve greater comparability among independent and public institutions, the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) is proposing changes to the IPEDS finance survey. The revised survey would require public institutions to allocate operation and maintenance of facilities, depreciation, and interest expenses among all other functional expense categories--just as independent institutions do.

NACUBO Research Projects
Research staff also design surveys and provide data analysis in other areas of interest to members. Current projects include: a survey of the delivery of Student Financial Services on campus. Our Recently Completed Projects and Past Projects pages address several other areas of interest, including responses to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 and the NACUBO Cost of College Study.
