Overview

The New Business Officers Program has established itself as a valuable experience for those new to the role of chief business officer, with nearly 450 alumni as the program moves into its tenth year. The intensive two-day workshop covers a wide range of issues that a chief business officer faces and guides you through the complexities of campus leadership.

Content areas include leadership styles, planning, board relationships, as well as emerging issues. You will be challenged to evaluate your current practices and strategies, and you will have a great opportunity to exchange ideas and network with colleagues.

Leading higher education consultants Larry Goldstein and Pat Sanaghan facilitate the program, with special topics covered by guest speakers including a college president, a corporate CEO, a provost, and experienced chief business officers.

Attendance at the New Business Officers Program, by application only, is limited to chief business and financial officers who report directly to the president or chancellor and who have been in their current positions for three years or less.

Many presidents find themselves in trouble over matters related to business issues.  CFOs are in an ideal position to educate their presidents to help them avoid self-inflicted wounds.  This session highlights the critical steps that CFOs can oversee to help set the proper institutional control environment.

Faculty

Larry Goldstein
Larry Goldstein is president of Campus Strategies, a management consulting firm providing services to colleges and universities as well as organizations serving higher education.  He also is involved in various professional activities including service on the Governmental Accounting Standards Board’s Advisory Committee for the GASB’s Comprehensive Implementation Guide.  Mr. Goldstein is the author of College and University Budgeting:  An Introduction for Faculty and Academic Administrators and has co-authored several publications including NACUBO’s Financial Accounting and Reporting Manual for Higher Education. 

Prior to establishing Campus Strategies, Mr. Goldstein served as NACUBO’s senior vice president and treasurer.  Before joining NACUBO he spent 20 years in financial administration positions on four college campuses.  In his last campus position he was the University of Louisville’s chief financial officer.  Prior to entering higher education financial administration, he was a tax associate with Touche Ross & Company. 

Mr. Goldstein, a certified public accountant, earned a bachelor of accountancy degree from Walsh College and a master of science degree from the University of Virginia.  He is a recipient of NACUBO’s Daniel D. Robinson Award in recognition of his contributions to higher education accounting and financial reporting.

 

Patrick H. Sanaghan
Patrick H. Sanaghan, Ed.D, is the president of the Sanaghan Group, an organizational consulting firm that specializes in collaborative strategic planning, retreat and meeting design and facilitation, leadership development, and leadership transitions.  He has over 25 years of consulting experience and has worked with over 40 colleges and universities.  Some of his clients have included  Cornell University; Shell Oil Company; The United States Can Company; The U.S. Navy; The William Penn Foundation; Philadelphia City Government; as well as the Cabinet of the Pennsylvania State Government.

He is the co-author of two books,  High Impact Tools and Activities for Strategic Planning (1998, McGraw-Hill) and Intentional Design and the Process of Change (2002, Follett), and numerous articles on leadership, change management, and meeting design.
