History:
|
NACUBO has been an association since 1962, when it succeeded a federation of associations of business officers that had given the profession a framework since 1951. In assuming its present form, NACUBO represents the culmination of a professional movement more than 75 years old.
Organized professional activity originated with the establishment of regional associations of business officers. The first, the Association of Business Officers of the State Universities and Colleges of the Middle West (later the Central Association of College and University Business Officers), was established in 1912. The Eastern Association was organized in 1920; the Southern Association in 1928; and the Western Association in 1936. By 1939, business officers of minority institutions had formed an association that later became the American Association of College and University Business Officers. One other organization, the National Association of Educational Buyers (NAEB), maintained a strong interest.
The first national organization, formed in 1951, was the National Federation of College and University Business Officers Associations, incorporated in Illinois, with officers and directors from the four regional associations, the American Association, and the NAEB. When NACUBO was formed in 1962, it brought the five organizations of business officers into a new national membership alignment, while the NAEB resumed its independent status. In 1967, the American Association was dissolved and its members moved into the regional/national structure of NACUBO.
NACUBO's central office was established in Washington, D.C. in 1967, the year the association also approved memberships for two-year institutions. From a membership of about 750 institutions at that time, NACUBO has achieved a membership of over 2,100.

|
Leadership:
|
The NACUBO Board of Directors is the governing body of the association and establishes its vision, mission, strategy and goals. As the association’s policy-making body, the Board charts the long-term plans of NACUBO while it assesses its current needs and priorities.
The Board is made up of elected leadership from each of the four regional associations: the Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers, the Central Association of College and University Business Officers, the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers, and the Western Association of College and University Business Officers.
There are eight at-large members elected by the Board from a list of nominees selected by the Nominating Committee. The Board elects the Chair of the Board. The President of the association is a voting member of the Board of Directors.
