Preliminary Results Show that College and University Endowments Returned 15.8 Percent in FY14

November 3, 2014

Higher education endowments and affiliated foundations achieved an average investment return of 15.8 percent in FY14, according to preliminary data from the 2014 NACUBO-Commonfund Study of Endowments® (NCSE). This compares with an average return of 11.7 percent reported by study participants in FY13.

"These higher returns will be a great benefit to students and faculty at colleges and universities," noted NACUBO President and Chief Executive Officer John D. Walda. "Additional resources generated by endowments will continue to help fund vital research, financial aid, and other programs at our institutions."

The FY14 preliminary results are based on data from 426 college and university endowments and affiliated foundations that have submitted full or partial data to the 2014 NCSE as of October 2014. The investment returns are net of investment fees and expenses paid from endowments during the fiscal year.

Complete and final data from the 2014 NCSE, which is expected to include full information from more than 830 institutions, will be released in late January 2015.
