Recent fine notices from the Internal Revenue Service have again focused attention on campus efforts to gather taxpayer identification numbers from students. NACUBO Advisory Report 2014-1 offers suggestions.

Activity-Based Costing Guide Released for Community Colleges

The ABCs of Activity-Based Costing in Community Colleges, a new guide from Johnson County Community College and the American Institutes for Research, is available to download from the Maximizing Resources for Student Success website. NACUBO community college members who participate in an upcoming national cost benchmarking project by October 27 will receive a $100 discount to join the effort.

White House Public Awareness Campaign Aims to Prevent Campus Sexual Assault

The White House recently announced “It’s On Us”—a new public awareness and education campaign to combat sexual assault on college campuses. The campaign includes a toolkit specifically designed for college and university administrators.

Cohort Default Rates Improve Slightly

Average three-year cohort default rates on federal loans dropped 1 percent to 13.7 percent in FY11, according to new data from the Department of Education. For the first time, schools with default rates above 30 percent for three consecutive years may face penalties.

Expanding Financial Leadership Series: Facilities, Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

On October 1, NACUBO began its web series Expanding Financial Leadership: Facilities, Energy Efficiency and Sustainability. Each 30-minute video will inform participants how to expand their knowledge base to create a conceptual facilities framework that can impact their campuses for years to come. In the first video, Definitions and Strategies for Sustainability, Gary Dirks, director of Arizona State University's LightWorks initiative, explains a variety of sustainability issues and gives an overview of major trends ASU is undertaking in facilities management.

The last two sessions in this series will be released in November and December. NACUBO members can access each webcast free of charge.

Effective Communication Between Trustees and Chief Business Officers

Communication between the chief finance/business officer and the board of trustees is one of the most critical information channels within an institution. Presented by a team of board members and finance officers, this 90-minute webcast will analyze the kind of information boards want and the kind of information boards need, along with effective delivery methods and timing.

This webcast is co-presented by NACUBO, the Association of Business Administrators of Christian Colleges, and the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges.

NACUBO 2015 Annual Meeting Call for Presentations Now Open

Deadline Approaching. NACUBO is seeking proposals for concurrent sessions and corporate showcases that offer in-depth and practical treatments of present-day issues facing the higher education community. Submissions should highlight solutions, initiate provocative discussions, and share effective strategies.

Proposal Deadline: 11:59 p.m., ET, October 14, 2014.

The NACUBO 2015 Annual Meeting will take place in Nashville, Tenn., July 18-21, 2015.
