Two College Board publications report results from several areas of study on college costs and student aid. Among other important findings, they report that considering all forms of grant aid, the net price to students in 2012-13 is estimated to be the highest in 20 years.

Preliminary Data Show Higher Education Endowments Returned -0.3 Percent in FY12
Early-release data from the 2012 NACUBO-Commonfund Study of endowments show that college and university endowments achieved a -0.3 percent investment return in FY12 (net of fees and expenses). Endowments returned 19.2 percent in FY11.

FASB Issues ASU on Treatment of Donated Securities
Last week, FASB issued an accounting standards update (ASU) that addresses the treatment of donated securities in the statement of cash flows. The ASU, No. 2012-05, “Classification of the Sale Proceeds of Donated Financial Assets in the Statement of Cash Flows,” will eliminate the current diversity in practice in this area.

IRPAC Recommends Clarification on Reporting Issues
The recently released report of the Information Reporting Program Advisory Committee includes recommendations to the IRS on several issues of interest to colleges and universities, including Form 1098-T; the new Form 1099-K; withholding on nonresident aliens and foreign entities; information return corrections; and other tax administration issues.
