Overview
This program is a fantastic introduction for new professionals moving into higher education accounting as well as those individuals seeking to brush up on their technical accounting knowledge. This accounting and financial reporting workshop covers net asset classes, restrictions, endowments, split interest agreements, capital assets, debt, and operating activities.
Attendees receive a thorough explanation of Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) standards relevant to higher education institutions. There is emphasis placed on understanding the financial statements, including sample statements for review. The financial statement sessions are held concurrently allowing the faculty to focus on the public and not-for-profit sectors of higher education reporting
The workshop is conducted by an experienced faculty including a university president, a controller, and an accounting professor. A networking reception is also included.

SHOW FULL BIO » Jerry Farley is president of Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. He previously was vice president for administrative affairs at the University of Oklahoma, Norman and Health Sciences Center campuses. Prior to that, he was vice president for business and finance at Oklahoma State University. Mr. Farley is a past chairman of the NACUBO Board of Directors, past president of SACUBO, and past chairman of the NACUBO Accounting Principles Council. He is a certified public accountant and coauthor of the first and second editions of the Basic Fund Accounting Training Package. Farley received NACUBO’s Daniel D. Robinson Award for his contributions to the field of college and university accounting.

University of Texas at Tyler
SHOW FULL BIO » Dr. Mary L. Fischer is a professor of accounting at The University of Texas at Tyler. Prior to her move to Texas, she taught at Fairfield University and served as controller at both Wesleyan University and at Columbia University. Dr. Fischer has written a wide array of articles on accounting education, cash flow, fund accounting, college and university accounting, unrelated business tax, and financial administration. She is a co-author of the fourth edition of College and University Business Administration and the updated Basic Fund Accounting training package. Dr. Fischer has authored accounting tutorials for the NACUBO Web site. She received both the NACUBO Daniel D. Robinson Award and the Professional Development and Scholarship Award.
Associate Vice President for Business & Finance
University of San Francisco
SHOW FULL BIO » Kimberly Kvaal is the Associate Vice President for Business & Finance at the University of San Francisco. She also teaches Principles of Accounting at USF’s School of Management. In her current role at USF, Ms. Kvaal serves on the President’s Leadership Team and is charged with the accounting and financial reporting for the institution as well as risk management. In her former role as Controller at Regis University, she served as a member of the Executive Budget Committee and was charged with development, implementation, and monitoring of the annual operating budget along with overseeing the financial accounting, reporting, and treasury functions. Repeatedly called upon to serve as faculty for WACUBO’s popular Accounting Series and NACUBO’s Intermediate Accounting and Financial Reporting workshops, Ms. Kvaal is an experienced presenter on not-for-profit accounting topics. Ms. Kvaal is active in her professional associations currently serving on NACUBO’s Accounting Principles Council and is the past co-chair of WACUBO’s Professional Development Committee. Ms. Kvaal holds a BA from the University of Colorado, Boulder, a MBA from Regis University, and is a licensed CPA in the state of Colorado. She has over twenty years of non-profit accounting experience, and serves on several community boards.
