  1. Bankruptcy and Collections
    Speaker: Chad Echols, The Echols Firm, LLC

  4. R2T4 & Modules - Two Years Later
    Speakers: Raymond Kimmel, University of Cincinnati Main Campus; Ken Wolterman, University of Cincinnati Main Campus
    In 2011 the Department of Education established new rules and regulations for the handling of Return to Title IV funds when students’ classes are taken in modules. Hear how, after two years, one institution has developed a clearer understanding those regulations, including the more difficult aspects of the rules.

  5. Financial Aid 101 for Bursar's
    Speakers: Tyson Cooper, Southern Virginia University; Melissa Stone, University of Delaware; Joseph Weglarz, Marist College
    Want to learn more about those irritating financial aid regulations that can impact your receivables? In addition to a brief overview of the financial aid basics, attendees will delve into both old and new federal requirements. Learning about verification (or QC), satisfactory academic progress (SAP), the new Pell Grant duration of eligibility limitation, and the 150 percent direct subsidized loan limits will lead to a better understanding of why some students who are counting on financial aid to pay their bills may not be eligible.

    Learn about developing and customizing a secure student drop box, versus a standard one, to use for student communication in lieu of email.   7. Managing the Complexities of Collecting from International Students

    Get some ideas to take back to your campus for developing or improving your financial literacy program for students. Learn how community college students enjoy playing “How to Win at LIFE” while practicing real world planning and budgeting skills.     What are the prospects in Congress for the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, immigration reform, or other legislation impacting colleges? Will brinkmanship continue to define federal budgeting? While Congress has been at a virtual standstill, the agencies have moved forward on a number of initiatives.     Join this interactive panel to discuss the opportunities and challenges that face our institutions in communicating effectively with students. The panel will include perspective from a couple of students from local colleges who will provide their insight on this important subject. We will explore topics such as e-mail, texting, the use of social media and the parent’s role in the process.

  13. Helping Students Cross the Finish Line
    Speaker: Charmaine Daniels, Georgia State University and Olivia Kynard, Springfield College
    Improving graduation rates is a universal goal for colleges and universities. Students are increasingly facing financial hardships preventing them from completing their degree. Learn how student financial services can play a key role in helping students, particularly, seniors succeed. Springfield College, a small nonprofit institution, has implemented an internal loan program that helps students complete their degree work while meeting their financial obligation. Georgia State University, a public research university, as part of a broader completion agenda, reaches out to students at risk of being dropped for nonpayment offering small retention grants.

  14. Leveraging Payment Technology
    Speaker: Ken Wolterman, University of Cincinnati Main Campus
    Using technology to streamline payment processing reduces costs and errors while improving service to students and staff. See how the University of Cincinnati is using new ATM’s located on campus to process departmental deposits without deposit slips while crediting University accounts automatically. We will also discuss and demonstrate the effective use of technology with institutional one card systems facilitating student non-cash payments in variety of situations.

  15. Redefining Disbursements
    Speaker: Marsha Lovell, University of California, Los Angeles and Christopher Ramos, University of California, Los Angeles
    When Treasury Services and Cash Management were added to the UCLA Student Financial Services team, processes needed streamlining. Auditors wanted to ensure that automated financial aid disbursements were verified before being paid. Human subject payments, petty cash and change fund disbursements were problematic, slow, and fraught with inappropriate reimbursements. An oversight position was created, internal controls and tracking were identified, and some very streamlined tasks emerged. Discover the steps taken to recreate compliant, timely, and well documented process improvements in disbursements.
