Results of the 2016 NACUBO Tuition Discounting Study

Overview

Tuition discounting remains a controversial topic in higher education. While the discounting lessens students’ tuition burdens, chief business officers (CBOs) are faced with declining net revenue and a student population that is constantly evolving. The discounting strategies campus administrators employ to tackle these issues often have broad implications in the future.

NACUBO’s annual Tuition Discounting Study (TDS) measures institution- and student-level tuition discount rates and other indicators of institutional grant awards to first-time, full-time freshmen and all undergraduates who attend private, non-profit colleges and universities.
 
Results from the latest study (available May 15, 2017), with 411 participants, will be shared as well as an opportunity to review the average discounting rates during the 2015-16 academic year as of the fall 2015, and preliminary estimates for 2016-17. You will also learn more about the tuition discounting strategies implemented by CBOs at private, nonprofit colleges and universities in fiscal year 2016 to increase net tuition revenue.

The panelists will discuss the complexity of factors that go into new tuition discounting, enrollment, and financial aid strategies.
