Turning Deferred Maintenance Challenges into Savings

Similar to other campuses, the University of Vermont (UVM) has had challenges with aging buildings and a desire to improve energy and reduce their carbon footprint. During this 30-minute video, you’ll learn about UVM’s overall challenges in historic core, “post war” facilities reaching lifecycle threshold, declining capital investments and a growing backlog of refurbishments.  UVM examined their facilities data to refine plans and overall green building policies to remove, improve and advance the buildings on campus.  Campus leadership examined data and made critical investments over a decade in their utilities that now has payback for finance, improved facilities and advanced environmental concerns.
 
Hear from Michelle Smith, UVM’s capital planning and management green building coordinator, about the strategy to reinvest in existing spaces by using five different funding mechanisms over time to improve deferred maintenance and energy efficiency. You’ll also find out how the university plans to replace or renovate half of the highest-need core buildings on campus within the next five years.  These investments in both individual buildings and major utility infrastructure plant and future plans have poised the campus to be carbon neutral by 2025.
