OD: The Cashless and Paperless Business Office

Overview

In the current economic climate, institutions are expected to streamline operations without jeopardizing service to students. With an enrollment of nearly 65,000 students at The Ohio State University, even small changes can result in significant cost savings. Two of the more dramatic changes implemented at OSU were eliminating cash in the bursar’s office, and making the decision NOT to actively bill students. During this webcast speakers will explain how changes were communicated to the community, the resulting savings to the institution, the impact of the changes on students as well as staff, and other intended (as well as a few unexpected) impacts.
 
Participants will learn about our self‐service online, dynamic student statement of account, and gain insight into the following advantages of going cashless:
  • The elimination of an armored car service
  • More efficient use of staff
  • Less dependence upon external venders (and the associated expense)
  • Overall increase in operating efficiency
  • Streamlined reconciliation procedures
  • Decrease in scrutiny by auditors, the IRS
In addition, speakers will briefly mention other student business office initiatives at OSU, largely enabled or expedited by the changes discussed above, including an earlier fee payment deadline, better and clearer communication to students, and an online, cross‐functional FERPA‐compliant student information release.
