OD: Large Institutions: Measuring What Matters

June 14, 2007

How can institutions take the rich data they collect, analyze it, and set a strategy for the future? How can you mine data in non-financial areas, such as student information systems and course management programs, to direct the university towards appropriate desired outcomes such as increased enrollments and student retention?

Learn ways to partner with academic areas to assist with issues that affect the president and the institution as a whole. NACUBO and SunGard Higher Education are pleased to present the first of several webcasts in a new Institutional Performance Improvement Series.

Institutional performance is more than just the financial success and health of a university. It involves seeing the big picture and understanding the key dynamics and indicators that identify trends in student retention, graduation rates, enrollment projections and more. The findings of the Spellings Commission have brought performance management issues to the forefront, questioning the processes in place at universities and asking how current practices can be improved. Higher education is under the magnifying glass and being accountable for targeted outcomes is critical.

A large institution’s financial health is one area to be considered when making strategic decisions for the future. There are, however, other aspects to performance improvement that involve the “other side” of the university including admissions, academic departments, institutional research, and student services. This program will provide a primer on how to analyze ample data already available in “non-financial” areas of the university that can profoundly affect institutional performance.

What You Will Learn:

  • Findings of the report of the Commission appointed by Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings
  • How the findings differ from past initiatives to address the need for institutions to be outcomes-focused and to tie data to institutional performance
