OD: How Behavorial Changes Helped Cut Energy Usage in Half

Recorded on: Wednesday, December 18, 2013 1:00 PM ET

Overview

At Valencia College, a community college in Orlando, Florida founded in 1967 and now attended by over 40,000 students on five campuses, there is a strong emphasis on energy efficiency for new and existing buildings. This emphasis over the past ten years is motivated by rising energy costs. Valencia College constructed 66 buildings between 1971 and 2012. Six buildings, 25% of total the college’s 2.1 million square feet, were built to LEED Gold standards with energy efficiency emphasized.

Valencia College has found a way to cut its energy usage per square foot nearly in half over the past five years. Through a three phased approach, Valencia saved approximately $3 million in energy costs during last fiscal year alone. One of the key components to their success has resulted from behavior changes. Learn how you can apply these approaches to your college or university to become more sustainable and reap the benefits.

On top of the savings Valencia obtained through retrofit projects, new chiller plants, system and control enhancements, they have found another $1.6 million in savings in the last two years specifically related to strategic behavioral changes. Efforts such as: developing new shut down procedures, evaluation of unoccupied classrooms and offices, energy audits, oversight of comfort complaints, adoption of college-wide guidelines for energy efficiency, publicity of savings achieved and recognition of "energy heroes," and engaging communication with faculty and staff have all contributed to this dramatic cost reduction.
