OD: NACUBO Update on IRS Form 1098-T: The Form Everyone Loves to Hate

Recorded on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 1:00 PM ET

While colleges and universities are still allowed to use the Box 2 reporting method for 2017 (forms filed in early 2018), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is not planning to grant any further relief from the Box 1 reporting requirement on the Form 1098-T. How is your institution planning to report amounts paid for qualified tuition and related expenses in Box 1 of the 2018 Form 1098-T (furnished to students and the IRS in early 2019)?
Complying with IRS Form 1098-T reporting requirements has long been a controversial and difficult process for many institutions. Congress changed a number of requirements related to the Form in recent years— and we anticipate even more when the IRS completes a rulemaking process that is currently underway. Many questions and issues that arose last year and in response to draft rules remain unanswered.
Join NACUBO and campus experts to understand recent changes and current obligations, as well as learn about best practices in both meeting compliance requirements and serving students and families.

After participating in this program you will be able to:

  • Understand current reporting requirements—and imminent changes
  • Recognize the potential for further regulatory changes
  • Review how two institutions transitioned to Box 1 reporting
  • Identify implementation issues that require advance planning, communication, and education
