Food Recovery Network...How Campuses Can Fight Waste and Feed People

Friday, October 31, 2014

Overview

Currently, Americans create more than 200 million pounds of food waste a year, costing the country more than $165 billion. Sadly, only three percent of the estimated 35 million tons of food surplus in the United States each year is donated or composted.

Your campus can make a difference in the community, and benefit your students’ organizational skills by identifying community resources that could use this food in a responsible manner. During this 30 minute session learn how Food Recovery Network, a national nonprofit operating in 27 states and working with 100 campuses, recovers perishable food that would otherwise go to waste. Their program brings students and the community together to fight food waste and hunger. Learn about the process, liability protection, tools, and resources needed to support your surrounding community and replicate these efforts on your campus. Since its founding, the network has collected nearly 500,000 pounds of food,  translating into 400,000 meals.
