Get Involved in National Cyber Security Awareness Month

August 31, 2017

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance have joined efforts to encourage the public to stay safe online throughout the month of October for National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM). The higher education association community, led by EDUCAUSE, is taking this opportunity to remind institutions to be mindful and aware of cybersecurity on their own campuses.

EDUCAUSE has a webpage available with NCSAM resources for higher education as well as a comprehensive Information Security Guide on planning and implementing institutional information security on college campuses that is developed and maintained by its Higher Education Information Security Council.

NACUBO encourages CBOs to revisit campus compliance requirements under the Safeguards Provision of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. The Office of Management and Budget and the Department of Education have expressed interest in adding a Safeguards Rule audit objective to FY18 audits; NACUBO strongly urges campuses to ensure that their information security programs are audit-ready.   Additional cybersecurity compliance resources can be found on the ED website.

NACUBO, EDUCAUSE, many other associations, and individual campuses have signed up to be NCSAM Champion organizations. Signing up is free, easy, and a great way to open up a cybersecurity discussion on your campus.
