Sustainability Campus Index Recognizes Top-Performing Institutions

The recently released 2016 Sustainable Campus Index, published by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASE), honors colleges and universities as top performers in sustainability.

The Index recognizes the major categories of academics, engagement, operations, and planning and administration. Within these four categories, there are 17 separate measurements that are captured in AASHE's Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) survey.

Four institutions were named top performers in their subsectors:

  • Appalachian State University (NC), Master's Institutions
  • Colorado State University, Doctoral/research institutions
  • Green Mountain College (VT), Baccalaureate Institutions
  • Kankakee Community College (IL), Associate's Colleges

Institutions were also recognized as top performers in specific aspects of sustainability, including:

  • Arizona State University - Purchasing
  • Colby College (ME) - Air & Climate
  • Colorado State University - Public Engagement, Waste, Diversity, Affordability
  • Columbia University (NY) - Transportation
  • Green Mountain College (VT) - Curriculum
  • Stanford University (CA) - Buildings; Water
  • Sterling College (VT) - Food & Dining
  • Unity College (ME) - Investment & Finance
  • University of Ontario Institute of Technology - Energy

STARS participants voluntarily submit data to gauge sustainability efforts. As of July 2016, 398 institutions in nine countries had submitted data, which is publicly available on the AASHE website.
