2016 ED Green Ribbon School Applications Accepted

September 8, 2015

For the second year in a row, colleges and universities can apply for recognition as a U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School (ED-GRS).

The program began in 2012 for K-12 schools and school districts and was expanded to include postsecondary institutions this year. The program recognizes practices and resources that reduce environmental impact and costs; improve health and wellness of students and staff; and provide environmental education in many disciplines that incorporate STEM, civic skills, and green career pathways, according to ED.

To apply, institutions must submit materials to their state educational authority—not directly to ED. Because each state has its own review time period and application specifics based on its stated ED-GRS purpose, it's best to contact your state authority soon for additional information. Each state authority may submit one postsecondary institution as a nominee, but since some did not do so last year, contacts may need to advocate for the submission.

In May, nine higher education institutions were named the first postsecondary Green Ribbon Schools. Ultimately, the award, in addition to reducing costs and advancing STEM and green careers, encourages state education agencies, stakeholders, and higher education officials to consider matters of facilities, health, and environment comprehensively and in coordination with state health, environment, and energy agency counterparts.

State authorities must rank and propose up to five K-12 schools or school districts and a single postsecondary institution by February 1, 2016. Awards will be announced on April 22, 2016.
