Guidance Available on Title IX Coordinator Role

May 18, 2015

The Office of Civil Rights at the Department of Education has published a guidance package on the roles and responsibilities of Title IX coordinators at schools, colleges, and universities. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits sex discrimination in education programs. Each educational institution that receives federal funds must designate at least one Title IX coordinator—and ensure that someone serves in that capacity at all times.

The guidance package includes three documents:

  • A "Dear Colleague Letter " outlining the requirement to appoint a Title IX coordinator.
  • A letter addressed to Title IX coordinators discussing their role.
  • A resource guide providing an overview of Title IX requirements in key areas such as admissions, athletics, sex-based harassment, and discipline.

Older guidance, including Questions and Answers on Title IX and Sexual Violence issued in April 2014, remains in effect.

An issue brief published by the American Council on Education summarizes the three new documents and highlights changes from existing guidance.
