CDC Advises Colleges, Universities and Students about Ebola

October 17, 2014

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has posted advice on its website for colleges, universities and students about Ebola. The web resource, in Q-and-A format, outlines current travel restrictions for countries in West Africa, provides recommendations for student health centers in addressing students and faculty arriving from countries with current Ebola outbreaks, and offers information resources to educate and safeguard campus populations.

The CDC:

  • Cautions colleges and universities that all non-essential travel to Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone be postponed until further notice.
  • Confirms that recommendations for student health centers are the same as those for U.S. health care workers and settings. Student health center clinicians should refer to the CDC Ebola Virus Disease Information for Clinicians in U.S. Health Care Settings.
  • Emphasizes that student health center staff should be educated about exposure risks, signs and symptoms of Ebola and be prepared to follow recommendations set forth in CDC Health Advisory: Guidelines for Evaluation of U.S. Patients Suspected of Having Ebola Virus Disease.
  • Recommends that institutions identify students, faculty, and staff who have been in countries where Ebola outbreaks are occurring within the past 21 days and conduct a risk assessment with each identified person to determine his or her level of risk exposure. All faculty and staff who have been in these countries within the past 21 days should be given instructions for health monitoring.
  • Includes monitoring guidelines for students, faculty, and staff who have recently traveled to countries where Ebola outbreaks are occurring.
