Readings on the Value of College

The following resources provide additional background on the value of higher education and the important role of colleges and universities in preparing students for the world of work.

Here are links to further reading about the value of higher education and how it helps equip graduates to be productive citizens in society. See also the article "Powering Up the Mind" in the July-August 2014 issue of Business Officer.

American Association of Colleges and Universities. AAC&U represents more than 1,300 public and independent member institutions from across the higher education sector devoted to advancing and strengthening undergraduate liberal education.

National Association of Colleges and Employers. NACE membership is composed of college career services professionals at nearly 2,000 colleges and universities nationwide as well as employer staffing professionals focused on university relations and recruiting at 1,000 employing organizations. The association's research includes a recruiting benchmarking study, internship and co-op survey, annual hiring outlook survey, and annual salary survey (tracking starting salaries of new graduates) of its employer members as well as an annual benchmarking survey of its career services members and an annual survey of students to gauge their employment preferences and expectations.

  • "A Roadmap for Transforming the College-to-Career Experience" is a crowdsourced paper resulting from "Rethinking Success: From the Liberal Arts to Careers in the 21st Century," a national thought leaders conference held in April 2012 on the Wake Forest University campus to discuss the need to transform higher education student career development.
  • Catalyst for Learning: ePortfolio Resources and Research Web site is part of the Connect to Learning project led by the Making Connections National Resource Center at LaGuardia Community College. Created by 24 campuses in the Connect to Learning project, this site provides data, practices, and strategies showing how e-portfolio can advance learning, deepen pedagogy and assessment, and support institutional change.
