Sequestration officially went into effect on March 1. We have updated our website to provide new information and also to report on subsequent changes that have altered the original requirements in the sequestration order.

Insights From College Board on How Families Pay College Expenses

In 2012-13, grants from all sources and education tax benefits covered 36 percent of the total cost of attendance for full-time undergraduates, according to a new analysis of higher education pricing and financing trends from the College Board. Student loans accounted for 26 percent of total charges, while parents’ and students’ other resources, such as employment earnings and savings, covered the remaining 38 percent of postsecondary expenses. 

News and Information on Tax-Exempt Bonds

The IRS Office of Tax Exempt Bonds issued its “FY 2013 Work Plan,” as well as a report identifying problems commonly faced by issuers of municipal bonds. The Joint Committee on Taxation issued a report analyzing a series of state and local tax issues, focusing on federal tax-exempt bond provisions.

NASFAA Tests Effectiveness and Clarity of Financial Aid Award Letters, Shopping Sheets

The National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators recently published a report summarizing the results of focus group testing on the Department of Education’s Shopping Sheet, along with two alternative award letters.
